Fibre Optics and the Changing Environment

A natural convergence of Technology and Business Open Access business model dominates our future direction for broadband and yet the environment appears to be constantly changing or is confusing. However this inevitable change is heading on a path that is relatively easy to predict and therefore plan for.

Economics, politics/policy, terrain will drive final architecture, ownership of asset and business modeling. However three things will remain irrefutably constant:

Fibre Optic Technology - A very high bandwidth long life asset that has capacity several orders of magnitude ahead of ANY other technology with NO challenging technology in evidence for many years
Open Access Business Model - A single infrastructure capable of delivering all the benefits of massive bandwidth from multiple service providers; driving economies of scale to the optimum "least cost" outcome
Fibre to the Premise - it WILL happen, the question is when

The change or variables are policy, terrain and business modeling; a clear strategy for the path forward is required to remove the "noise" from what is essentially a sound vision for the future.

A question often asked is "what is the cost of implementing the infrastructure?" when rather the question should be "what is the cost of NOT implementing the infrastructure?" when competing businesses, regions and nations are on the path and in competition with you.

There are many opportunities in the layers of an exciting new infrastructure that will undoubtedly delivery benefits to our lives, businesses and the nation; what is required is a clear vision and leadership.
